Dr Phil Botham was appointed to the Committee on 1 April.
Dr Botham is Principal Science Advisor (Product Safety) for Syngenta and also acts as an independent consultant.
He is Principal Science Advisor for the Product Safety organisation in Syngenta, an international agribusiness, focusing on the human safety of the company’s agrochemical, biotechnology and seed products. He is based in Jealott’s Hill, Berkshire.
Dr Botham has 40 years of experience in toxicology and human safety assessment. He joined ICI in 1980 at the company’s Central Toxicology Laboratory (CTL) in Cheshire where he undertook a number of scientific and leadership roles, developing specific expertise in acute toxicology, allergy and immunotoxicology, as well as in in-vitro toxicology and more recently neurotoxicology. He relocated to Jealott’s Hill in 2007 where he became the Global Head of Product Safety. He moved into his current role in 2017. He is a Fellow of the British Toxicology Society and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and has been a Board Member of the UK NC3Rs. He also chairs a number of industry association expert committees in toxicology and human safety. He has been an author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and is a reviewer for several journals in his fields of expertise.
