Professor Robert Smith BA(Hons) MSc PhD

Public Interest Representative

Professor Rob Smith was appointed to the Committee on 1 April 2010 as a Public Interest Representative. He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds since 2006 and was a Defra Research Programme Advisor from 2004-2010. Until taking early retirement in 2009, he was Dean of Applied Sciences at the University of Huddersfield and had previously been Professor of Biology and Head of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Leicester. Professor Smith's research is in the field of population biology where he specialises in mathematical modelling and the management of insect and rodent pests.

Professor Smith has eight years of recent experience in risk assessment as an independent member of the statutory Advisory Committee on Pesticides (ACP). He was appointed to the ACP as a specialist in environmental effects of pesticides and became deputy chair of the ACP and chair of the Environmental Panel. After a break of three years, he was reappointed to the ACP in February 2010. Although trained in biological sciences and statistics, Professor Smith sees his role as a non-specialist member of the COT as being here to represent consumers and to ask the sorts of questions that are of interest to the general public.

Professor Smith's appointment to the Committee expires on 31 March 2016.
