Working Group on Variability and Uncertainty in Toxicology

The COT established a working group to consider variability and uncertainty in toxicology.

The COT identified a need to review the approaches that are currently used or that might be used in the future, for dealing with variability and uncertainty in the biological data utilised in the risk assessment of chemical in food and so established a working group to consider the variability and uncertainty in toxicology (VUT).

The aim of the Working Group on Variability and Uncertainty in Toxicology was to develop a more systematic and transparent approach to risk assessment. The Working Group reviewed the sources of variability and uncertainty in risk assessment, and evidence of the biological reasons for the range of variability in response to toxic chemicals as well as other sources of uncertainty and considered whether the current methodology should be refined.

The Working Group, met under the chairmanship of Professor Peter Aggett (previously Vice-Chairman of the COT), with a membership who provided wide clinical, scientific and mathematical expertise together with a non-specialist consumer perspective to the work of the group.
